“I was a Democrat in my early years as a pastor. Several years later, I moved over to the Republican camp. I changed my registration because Republicans, I believed, better reflected than Democrats a commitment to Judeo-Christian values. Now I am beginning to see key Republicans drifting away from the traditional values which made our country great.
“Despite charges from Leftists, I do not want to create a Theocracy. I know, however, if our laws and public policies are not drawn from principles higher than ourselves – if we don’t understand our rights come from God – if we think we should separate God from the state – if we believe we can forget God and live out some practical form of atheism to preserve peace in a pluralistic society, we will ultimately lose our liberty. There has to be a moral consensus around a code larger than our own opinions – certain core beliefs most of us accept as a true north that can keep us characteristically unified. Never before have I believed more that our salvation and hope of sustaining this blessed Republic of ours is not in princes or mortal men, but in the Lord alone! It is either revival or ruin! There is nowhere and to no one else we can go!”
