Last week the Christian Action League reported that a House Judiciary Committee considered and passed HB 2 – Protect Health Care Freedom, a measure seeking to block the “individual mandate” for North Carolinians that requires all Americans to purchase health care coverage by 2014 or face monetary penalties. The Legislation would also require the North Carolina Attorney General to enforce the provisions of HB 2 and join 26 other states nationwide that are currently challenging the constitutionality of the new health care law.
HB 2 – Protect Health Care Freedom is expected to reach the House floor for a vote as early as tomorrow. Your lawmaker needs to hear of your support for this critical legislation.
Yesterday a group of health workers and consumer advocates joined House Democrats to criticize the bill. Dr. Charles van der Horst from the UNC School of Medicine said Republicans didn’t have a plan for health care needs. He argued that NC Republicans were wasting taxpayer dollars that should focus on issues of job creation and balancing the state’s budget.
But even while House Democrats and other opponents of HB 2 were speaking out against the measure, Federal Judge Roger Vinson of the US District Court for the Northern District of Florida struck down the entire Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which President Obama signed into law last year. NC House Speaker Thom Tillis told WRAL News that the ruling strengthens the case for HB 2. “It makes me regret that we didn’t do it last year, to maybe even hasten the decision or move it forward. But we’ll move forward with this.”
According to a Civitas Poll released today, sixty-three percent of North Carolina voters support legislation to protect their right to opt out of Obamacare. “But nothing should be taken for granted,” said Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League. “Lawmakers are hearing from opponents, they also need to hear from their constituents who support this legislation.”
