“There are people who are now, perhaps unlike any time in our nation’s history, which are turned off to Christianity altogether and who only think of believers with contempt, often verbalizing their scorn with vitriol. In the face of such seemingly insurmountable challenges, how is it that any Christian can be much of an optimist? How is it that we can believe that such matters can be reversed? The answer is we cling to the promise of Him who said that the gates of hell cannot prevail against Christ’s church. Think about that for a moment. The promise is not that the church will always survive the assaults of the world. Instead, it is that all of the forces of hell itself cannot ultimately prevail against the church militant with the confession of Christ’s lordship upon her lips.”
