Rev. Mark Creech Makes an Appeal

Christian Action League
February 26, 2018

Dear Friends,

I want to make an appeal to you.

The Christian Action League has a prophetic calling in our culture.  I don’t mean foretelling the future, but forth-telling. In other words, a prophetic role is the Spirit-given capacity of addressing matters of life by the proclamation of God’s truth. It’s speaking forth the mind and counsel of God.

As a lobbyist representing the Christian Action League, this is what I do in the North Carolina General Assembly. I bring the truth of God’s Word to bear on much of the legislation lawmakers consider.  Most of this work is done through establishing relationships with lawmakers, while on other occasions it involves testifying before committees, as well as a host of other duties.

Some would critically argue that what I do is judgmental in nature. Didn’t Jesus say that we shouldn’t judge? they often ask.

I am going to say something striking. Jesus never said we shouldn’t make moral judgments about people’s behavior, politics, or culture. In Matthew chapter 7, where Jesus spoke about judging, he merely condemned our proclivity to judge others by standards we don’t apply to ourselves. If we were prohibited from all judging, then we could never discern between a Hitler and a Mother Teresa.

Moreover, during a time when there are so many spiritual perils, when many of our God-given rights are under assault, and there is seemingly so little understanding of this nation’s religious moorings, our ministry becomes more needed than ever.

Someone must be willing to speak bluntly, nevertheless graciously, to the sins of this age – many of them crafted and embedded in public-policy initiatives.

I am reminded of the minister who was asked by his church not to speak so directly to sin. He went to the medicine cabinet and brought back a bottle of strychnine marked POISON. He said, “I see that you want me to do. You want me to change the label. Suppose I take off this ‘poison’ label and put on some mild label such as ‘peppermint candy.’ Can’t you see the danger? The milder you make the label, the more deadly the poison.

The Christian Action League’s role is not an easy one, but it’s a necessary one.

Our work is almost exclusively supported by churches from across the state. We receive no monies from outside groups.

This is why from time to time, we need to call on the churches and our fellow Christians who understand the need for what we do to help us financially.

If you’re a pastor or another church leader, will you encourage your church to take up a love offering for us? Lawmakers are coming back in May and we need to be fully supplied for our lobbying activity.

Perhaps you as an individual would also be willing to contribute generously.

Would you pray about it? Would you pass this correspondence along to your pastor, maybe your Sunday School class, or some other ministry in your church?

Maybe you are someone who is politically engaged and you know of friends in your church who would, along with yourself,  be willing to send us a joint gift.

We need your help at this time!
