“In one of the previous churches I pastored, there was a stately and distinguished-looking old man in my church. The fact was, however, he just cleaned up well. He was just a farmer who also ran a country store. His son-in-law was often impressed with how distinguished he could look. One day, the son-in-law and the elderly gentlemen were in a long line at a cafeteria when the son-in-law had a brilliant idea. He said loud for everyone in the line to hear, ‘C’mon Senator, we got to get to the head of this line if we are going to catch that plane.’ At once, people moved to let the two of them to the front of the line. The older man said nothing and just grinned. As a pastor, I think I’ve seen it all. I’ve met duplicitous politicians doubling as the commoner, and I’ve known duplicitous commoners doubling as politicians.”
