My Dear Friends,
I want to share with you a few words from one of my sermons from several years ago.
“Dr. Peter Marshall once wrote: ‘Indeed, crucifixion must be, if our souls are to be saved to eternity, they must be lost to time. If they are to be saved for the treasures that moth and rust doth not corrupt, they must be lost to the riches of this world. If they are to be saved to heaven, they must be lost to earth.’
“‘For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it,’ (Mt. 16:25) said our Lord Jesus.
“Ah, but the world cries out something very different. Society and the world say to Christians: ‘You cannot keep for yourself the world’s many pleasures and luxuries if you follow the strict Christian law of self-denial and sacrifice.’ How true! But I remind you the church is not to be concerned with conserving anything for itself, but with saving souls and society from complete corruption.
“To God’s people, the world says: ‘You cannot enjoy the favor and approval of this age with its easy morality and its broadmindedness if you oppose such things in the name of Christ.’ Again, this is true! Of course, the church cannot save herself for this age, when she is supposed to be saving herself for an age that will be alive when this one is dead and gone.
“Again, can’t you see it? Sacrifice is what it’s all about. We may have been redeemed by grace, but that grace is based on Christ’s sacrifice. It is the essence of the Christian religion. And it is through sacrifice our faith and redemption are spread to many others. Sacrifice is ultimately what it’s all about. And if you haven’t grasped this truth yet, you haven’t mastered the Christian religion’s fundamentals. You haven’t understood the very basics of the Christian faith.”
“In countless ways, Providence provides for us opportunities for sacrifice. Bishop Westcott said of these opportunities:
“‘We can obey it, and for the most part, we can all evade it. But in each case, we know that it has come; and that it has left its trace behind. We are not afterward what we were before we either welcomed or refused the opportunity for self-denial. We are stronger or weaker. Our sympathies are broader or narrower. Our spiritual vision is keener or duller. Life for us is larger in meaning and promise or brought more near to the standard of our self-chosen littleness.’”
Christmas and New Years are the season for giving – sacrificial giving. During this time, we celebrate God’s sacrifice of his “only begotten Son” (Jn. 3:16). And we celebrate the gift of Christ, whom the Bible says “emptied himself” for our sake (Phil. 2:7) and “though he was rich,” yet for our sake “became poor” (2 Cor. 8:9).
As we approach 2021 and finish out the last days of 2020, I want to call on you to make a sacrificial gift to the Christian Action League. Our Christian witness and advocacy for all things righteous are essential for providing North Carolina lawmakers with the moral compass they need for governing. Without it, dark voices have considerably more influence and power to wield.
Will you help us? We truly need your assistance at this hour.
