By Jeff Larson, The Back Pew

“There’s something to the saying, ‘If we had more preaching on hell, there would be less hell in our streets.’ Indeed, if we had stronger preaching in the pulpit, there would likely be stronger saints in the pews. Too many preachers want to be seen as scholars and erudite. There’s a place for that, but if people don’t hear the passion in your voice, then they don’t know if you really mean it. If they don’t know that you really mean it, if they can’t tell the message has changed you, how can you expect it to change them? Believe it or not, the preacher who had the most impact on my life was a fiery old militant fundamentalist who sometimes sounded like a drill sergeant. But his speech, to me, was like the booming voice of the Almighty with an authoritative word from heaven. I got saved under that kind of preaching. It may have fallen under disfavor today, but I suggest this sinful generation desperately needs it once again.”
