I am not divine, only a man, but if I am correct in my assessment, I see the election of Donald Trump as a reprieve for America. Massive numbers of Evangelicals showed up at the polls to vote for Trump. Perhaps God has seen our love for this country and has answered our prayers for a stay on his judgment. The election of Clinton would have most certainly moved us closer to that tragic end. Still, America needs more than a reprieve, it needs redemption.
This means our efforts at evangelism, while also engaging the culture with the teachings of the Word of God must increase. We must not go back to business as usual, warming our pews, sustaining our religious traditions, and solely depending on the results of an election. Instead, we must pick up a Cross, perhaps suffer many offenses and make numerous sacrifices to pull our country back from the abyss.
As I see it, Trump’s election at best moves us in the right direction. Trump, however, is not our Savior. We know there is but one Savior for America and that is Christ. But even so, Christ is represented to the world in his people, and unless we are willing to be scourged, bleed, humiliated, and die to ourselves (figuratively speaking) in the cause of Christ, there can be no redemption for America. Liberty cannot be preserved.
Christianity and freedom are so intimately related, it is impossible to really have one without the other.
I rejoice in these election results. I am thankful to God. I know what I’m saying may not be the happy dance you were expecting.
I’m just concerned God’s people really understand that we have to change. The church must repent of its many sins, abandon its apathy, and forsake its indifference. It must zealously embrace its calling to win the lost to Christ and impact the culture for righteousness sake. Much of the reason for the mess in our country is because the church has failed to do these things.
Just as the motto for the Christian Action League admonishes, “The only lasting cure for evil and injustice is Christian Action.”
