“I know I need to lose some pounds. I realized it recently when I went to play hide and seek with the grandchildren, and unfortunately, discovered I could only play seek. But let me say something about this, and it’s not an excuse for unhealthy living. I think we are obsessed with our bodies in this age and time, while we completely ignore the spiritual. The apostle Paul wrote to young Timothy, “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (I Timothy 4:8). Bodily exercise, weight loss, etc., will only get you so far in life. Plus, I think we have to be reasonable about such matters, considering our age and various other circumstances. Our bodies grow older. We degenerate. We ugly-up – no matter what steps we take to slow it all down. Neglect your relationship with God, however, and the discipline of nurturing and strengthening one’s relationship to him through Jesus Christ and the loss can be eternal.”
