‘Gambling needs to be treated like a rabid dog coming down your street,’ says Ex. Dir.

Let me ask you a critical question. What would you do if you knew there was a gruesome predator headed down your street? Wouldn’t you do something about it?
One of my favorite movies is To Kill a Mockingbird, which features Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. One of the great scenes in that film shows a rabid dog coming down a neighborhood street – a short way from Finch’s house. A housekeeper, Calpurnia, watching Mr. Finch’s children, Jem and Scout, calls Mr. Finch at work and reports the danger. Finch waste no time rushing over with the county sheriff and shoots the dog down, instructing his children not to go near the dog, saying, it’s as dangerous dead as alive.

Would that communities everywhere, especially the churches, understood that any gambling interest moving into an area is like a rabid dog, a gruesome predator headed down your street bringing lots of pain and suffering with it, and in some cases, even death. The threat needs to be stopped.
Ministers are shepherds assigned with the divine mission of watching over the flock. Their role is to protect God’s people, their communities, their state and nation, from wicked and predatory influences. I’m going to make a strong statement: There is no industry more predatory than the gambling industry and it ought to be treated like a rabid dog coming down your street.
This is why I want to ask you, as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to be present for a rally, this coming Tuesday, January 27th at Life of Worship Ministries, located at 405 South Cherokee Street, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. The rally will be brief – doors opening at 4:45 pm and lasting from 5:15pm – 5:35pm. Numerous local clergy are expected to be there to speak, as well as myself and Dr. Richard Land, president of Southern Evangelical Seminary in Charlotte, and former president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.
My good friends from the Kings Mountain Awareness Group have sent out a warning about a Catawba Indian Casino resort proposal for Kings Mountain. Stopping such a dangerous proposition for your community will take building a culture of resistance.
This is why your presence as a moral leader is desperately needed, as well as the presence of five or more of your church members. It’s critical to show the leadership of Kings Mountain and Cleveland County, as well as the surrounding areas that the churches are firmly against this kind of enterprise.
Come to the rally fellow clergy, and bring your people too. Be prepared to take aim. It appears there’s a rabid dog, a predator coming down your street.
