WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Senate is poised to vote today on a bill that would overturn the longstanding “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that prohibits homosexual conduct in the military. And the Christian Action League is calling on members of the faith community across North Carolina to take action on the matter today by phoning Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC).
“We join the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, the American Family Association and many other Biblically-based organizations in calling for this legislation — the National Defense Authorization Act — to be stopped in its tracks,” said the Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League. “Not only would affirming homosexuals in the military undermine the effectiveness of our nation’s armed forces, but this bill further opens the door to elective abortions on military bases.”
“There is no constitutional right to serve in the military,” said Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, in a letter to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, reminding him of the legal principals that helped set the 1993 law, approved with bipartisan support during the Clinton administration. “Military life is fundamentally different from civilian life.” He said the admission of openly homosexual individuals into the military would engender sexual tension and negatively impact “troop morale, unit cohesion, and order.”
The American Family Association also points out that it would pose a clear and present danger to religious liberty, potentially ending the military careers of conservative officers and chaplains with “deeply held religious convictions that homosexual conduct should not be promoted in the armed forces.”
Further, the bill would remove restrictions that now bar elective abortions on military installations and use tax dollars to murder the unborn.
“Our taxpayer-funded military hospitals should be centers to help restore sick and injured troops, not to take the lives of our service women’s unborn children,” Land wrote, adding that the move would also discourage pro-life physicians from seeking or continuing their military careers.

“These are strong arguments that should encourage Senator Hagan to vote against this bill, especially if she receives enough input from North Carolinians,” said the Rev. Creech. “We are asking everyone to phone Sen. Hagan’s office at (202) 224-6342 now and ask her to vote against the National Defense Authorization Act because of these two very harmful provisions.
