What is secularism but a vacuum to be filled with values determined by the pervasive opinion of the hour? It could be the view of the strong man, the sentiment of the oligarch; it could even be the seemingly noble consensus of democracy, which at times throughout history has been little more than mob rule.
If the determination of our rights is based upon this scheme, then we are all men most miserable, seated upon a rickety raft of life and rushing almost helplessly from one set of troubled waters to the next and ultimately over the falls.
No! We cannot move down safe waters toward a land of milk and honey unless we set our compass by the true north of God’s Word.
Do not allow the revisionists of history to deceive you. The founders of our great republic didn’t set up a secularist government. They drew from the Scriptures. They understood that our rights are not handed down by the state, but bestowed by the Almighty, Benevolent Judge of all the earth, God. The state’s role is simply to protect and preserve these God-given rights.
If it is otherwise, if the best system is a secularist one, then no one’s rights are any more secure than fleeting opinion. If it is the way of the secularist, then we are more apt to legislate immorality, tread upon the rights of each other, and inevitably bring down the very judgment of God.
