Today the U.S. House approved HR 8404 – The Respect for Marriage Act, which codifies same-sex marriage into federal law. President Joe Biden has promised to sign the legislation.
In response, Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League, said passage of the bill was imminent after North Carolina’s two U.S. Senators, Tillis and Burr, were responsible for getting the bill over the finish line in the Senate. Rev. Creech added in a statement to the press:
“The Christian Action League of North Carolina wishes to thank every Republican member of the U.S. House from North Carolina who wisely voted against the so-called ‘Respect for Marriage Act.’ We earnestly hope and pray the Republican Party is not drifting in the same direction North Carolina’s two U.S. Senators voted on this measure. Not only will the redefinition of marriage into federal law result in a negative sea-change of consequences for the institution of marriage and our culture, but the Republican Party’s support for it is likely to result in a massive exit by evangelicals. This is not meant as a threat but only to state the inevitable consequences. Republicans must stop assuming evangelicals have nowhere to go but to them. We dare to believe what the Bible says: God is with the faithful, and his power goes with them as they obey His Holy Word.
“I know some will argue we must learn to show tolerance. The late renowned Presbyterian minister, Dr. D. James Kennedy, had it right when he said: ‘Tolerance is the last virtue of a dying culture.’ Violence or persecution of LGBTQ+ is not acceptable. But for federal law to sanction same-sex marriage as equal in value to the state as traditional marriage, is to provide a purely subjective endorsement with no bearing in facts. It is writing a lie into law and providing privileges and benefits from the state when same-sex marriage can offer nothing in return to the state.
“Conservative evangelicals are committed not just to proclaiming how the souls of humanity may be saved from the great Judgment to come. We are committed to proclaiming all the ways that God has ordained for humanity’s flourishing. Nothing is more central to the well-being of society than the institution of marriage. When marriage, as God defines it, is abandoned and fails, whether by co-habitation, no-fault divorce, same-sex marriage, or all of the above, the weight of the aftermath over the years will destroy us by a thousand cuts.
“Thomas Jefferson once said, ‘I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.'”
