Statement on Governor Cooper’s Veto of the Human Life Non-Discrimination Act

Today, Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed HB 453 – Human Life Nondiscrimination Act/No Eugenics – a critical piece of legislation that would ban abortions based on race or a disability such as Down Syndrome.

In response, Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League, provided the following statement:

According to the Bible, more than anything else, if not indeed to the exclusion of everything else, the state’s calling from God is to judge and suppress evil. Governments that cannot effectively discern between good and evil suffer a fatal flaw and will ultimately be toppled by the Almighty. Their leaders will be overthrown, and the people complicit with their actions will also be cast down.

As Thomas Jefferson once said, “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.”

By divine standards, it is a revolting conceit that struts before the Creator and purports there is any virtue in denying the life of an innocent unborn child. Worse still is the repugnant hubris by government leaders who argue a provision should be allowed in law for an unborn child’s life to be terminated because of its race or Down Syndrome.

It was the devil himself who said, “I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.” (Isa. 14:13). Gov. Cooper’s response to this bill is no less than exalting his person and state office above the authority of Him who is “no respecter of persons” (Acts 10:34), and commands, “You shalt not murder” (Ex. 20:13).

We expect the measure to come back to lawmakers for an override attempt. Some legislators who voted for the bill will now have to decide whether to uphold the Governor’s veto. Therefore, I think it wise for all lawmakers concerned to consider the words of Jesus, “If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into the ditch” (Mt. 15:14). It is often difficult to break away from the pack, show courage and stand up to power and do what is right, but God grants no excuses for cowardice in moments of great moral import.
