“Once upon a time there was a kite who wanted to be free. He was quite thrilled the day his Master took him out, and he rose high above the earth. But suddenly he found he could go no further. His master only let the string out so far.
“’Why does he hold me back like this?’ the kite fretted. ‘If you think I am high in the sky now, well, if my master would loose me and let me go on my own, I would show you how high I could go.’
“One day while the kite was fretting thus, the string broke and it wasted no time catching the breeze, but to his surprise the kite started to waver. He was blown from side to side, then turned topsy-turvy, and came floating downward, unable to right itself. Finally, the kite was swept by the strong wind up against a light wire and there it hung all tattered and torn.
Freedom untethered from the Master means ruin. Whether an individual or a nation, only as we are tethered to God can we reach and sustain great heights.”
