It means so much to me that you’re interested in our work. Because of your passion, I think your interest will peak when you read the content of this email.
As the North Carolina General Assembly reconvenes today for the Short Session of the 2023-2024 Legislative Biennium, we are gearing up to advocate for Christian values and principles in the halls of power.
According to recent reports, several critical issues are likely to be on the table during this session. House Speaker Tim Moore has indicated that there may be an increase in funding for the Opportunity Scholarships, addressing the demand for educational choice in North Carolina.
With the Biden Administration’s new federal rule prohibiting transgender bathroom bans, parents are increasingly exploring alternatives to public schools. Any responsible parent would naturally have profound concerns about the potential implications of allowing students who identify as a different gender than their biological sex access to bathrooms or locker rooms corresponding to their preferred gender. It would be entirely understandable if every father with a daughter in public school felt compelled to withdraw their child out of genuine concern for her safety.
Additionally, concerns about potential revenue gaps have raised discussions about the possibility of introducing Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs) as a means to fill those gaps. Video lottery terminals are predatory gambling machines designed to exploit vulnerable individuals for profit. These machines contribute to the erosion of communities, perpetuating addiction, financial ruin, and despair.
Furthermore, the ongoing debate over medical marijuana continues to be a matter of contention in the legislature, with far-reaching implications for our state.
A recent special edition of “Time” magazine, entitled “Cannabis,” has drawn attention to the issue. Notably, its exploration of marijuana as medicine echoes many of the concerns voiced by the Christian Action League. The report highlights findings from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, which caution against the prevalent enthusiasm surrounding cannabis.
Margaret Haney, PhD, Professor of Neurobiology and director of the Cannabis Research Laboratory at Columbia University, underscores the lack of conclusive evidence supporting its medical benefits, stating, “Whatever’s ailing you – anything from glaucoma to cancer to migraines – there are people who will tell you cannabis can help, even though, in most cases, we have no evidence of medical benefit.”
As our legislative session advances, it is crucial to heed the insights of experts and the evidence provided by scientific research, rather than relying solely on anecdotal accounts or marijuana industry hype.
At the Christian Action League, we are committed to being at the forefront of each of these critical issues, advocating for policies that reflect Christian values and create the best environment for human flourishing.
