According to a North Carolina-based Christian activist, Republicans who forget the conservative faith-based voters who put them in office do so at their own risk.
Mark Creech, who serves as the executive director of the Christian Action League of North Carolina, warns Christian voters about political candidates who masquerade as pro-family advocates merely to get the conservative religious vote.
In his recent column in The Christian Post, titled, “Forget at Your Own Risk: Conservative Faith-based Voters Put Republicans in Office,” Creech stresses how vital the Christian vote is for Republican candidates.
“Conservative evangelical Christians are such a large voting block and had so much influence over the last election,” he asserts. “And we anticipate [that they] will have considerable influence on the 2016 election.”
Creech explains that he has unfortunately witnessed Republicans backing away from supporting the very pro-family issues that got them elected into office in the first place.
“It’s just a form of political suicide for them to back away from those issues and ultimately lose the conservative evangelical votes,” the League’s leader contends.
Creech says one example is North Carolina Republican Congresswoman Rene Ellmers, who could face a serious primary challenge in 2016 because she effectively killed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
“There are some powerful pro-life groups in North Carolina,” he notes. “These groups have developed a strong coalition in the state. So if they should come together and seek to find someone to challenge Rene Ellmers in a primary, and work to get in behind that candidate, there’s a good chance that candidate would beat Rene Ellmers.”
According to Creech, abortion isn’t the only issue on which Ellmers has alienated conservatives. He says she has also been weak on the border issue revolving around illegal immigration and President Barack Obama’s “executive amnesty” order.
