There is an incredible promise of strength and help found in the Epistle of James, chapter 5 and verses 16 through 18. In this text the apostle exhorts:
The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain; and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
The word translated effectual in the text actually means intense and without wavering. There is tremendous power in such praying when offered by a righteous individual.
James cites as an example the prophet Elijah. We usually think of the prophets as cut from a different cloth than ourselves. But according to this text, Elijah, one of the greatest of all the prophets “was a man subject to like passions as we are.” It was just as difficult for him to step out on faith and believe the promises of God as it often is for us. Yet Elijah prayed it wouldn’t rain as a punishment for the people’s sin, with the hope of bringing them to their senses. And such passionate praying for a righteous cause kept it from raining for three years. Then when it was obvious the people had learned their lesson, he prayed again and asked for rain and it fell on the drought stricken land in torrents.
My dear friends, House Bill 1366 – The School Violence Prevention Act is legislation that is a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Despite the arguments of its proponents, it is not about prohibiting bullying in North Carolina’s public schools as much as it is about teaching our children that homosexuality and other alternate sexual behaviors are perfectly normal and acceptable.
The Christian Action League is working diligently to stop this legislation. But much is against us. Conference Committee members who will take up the bill have been selected and it appears the majority of its members will likely support the inclusion of “sexual orientation” and “gender identity or expression” in the measure’s final version. The only way the bill is likely to be stopped is if Senate members stand firm and vote down any legislation with such enumerations in it.
This is why I am earnestly asking you to pray about this matter. Pray that God will give Senate members wisdom from above concerning this bill. Pray for the homosexual lobby, which is pushing this legislation so aggressively. Pray for their deliverance from unnatural, lustful, and sinful passions. Pray that God’s people would put away their own sins and faithfully follow Christ. Pray for the great State of North Carolina. Pray for the advancement of the kingdom of God.
If you have yet to send an email to Senate members in opposition to HB 1366, do it right now! Click here to read the orginal alert and simply submit.
This battle is the Lord’s. And with complete confidence we can trust the outcome to Him. I urge you once again to pray. Like Elijah, pray with a clean heart, for a righteous cause, believing God is sovereign and can do anything.
God Bless,
