Public Health England (PHE) has published a review of the evidence of the impact of booze, looking at the health, social and economic impacts of drinking.
The report also revealed heavy alcohol use has been identified as a cause of more than 200 health conditions, including liver cancer, heart disease, female breast cancer and lung cancer.
The highest rate of deaths caused by drinking occurs in the north east region of the UK, which is closely followed by the north west, West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber.
Death rates from alcohol mortality are lowest in London, with the south east just behind.
The figures have shown alcohol is now more affordable and people are drinking twice as much as they did 40 years ago. Read the rest of this entry
