Try to imagine, if you can, a community, a state, a country where there was no one to uphold the laws of society. No one to respond when you dialed 9-11, no one to stand between law-abiding citizens and those who would run rough-shod over others, trampling their rights, stealing their peace and property. A world with no law and order would be a world hardly worth living in.
Thankfully, we can’t imagine that world because we are blessed with good men and women who are willing to put on a uniform every day and put their lives on the line to keep peace and civility in our communities. Regardless of the danger, regardless of the calls to defund them, regardless of the hateful rhetoric from leftist politicians who favor the criminals, dedicated men and women who put others before self are still willing to sacrifice of themselves for the safety of others.
Thank God for these heroes who walk among us – our fellow-citizens who stand guard night and day – our law enforcement officers from the local police departments, to our county Sheriffs and deputies to the NC Highway Patrol. These are truly our unsung heroes.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation’s Capital each year.
The National Peace Officers Memorial Service, which is sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, is one in a series of events which includes the Candlelight Vigil, sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and seminars sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.)
National Police Week will draw attendees from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies around the world. This offers a unique opportunity to meet others who work in law enforcement. In that spirit, the Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 sponsors receptions each afternoon and evening during Police Week. These events are open to all law enforcement personnel and gives attendees an opportunity to enjoy fellowship and comradery outside of the day-to-day rigor and routine of law enforcement.
We salute all of our local law enforcement personnel and want them to know that we pray for them and greatly appreciate their service and sacrifice to keep us and our communities safe.
The Christian Action League of North Carolina joins in celebrating and saluting these heroes who work to protect and serve the public. God bless them and their families.
