Twenty years ago, USA Today ran an interesting story about a couple named Sandy and Theresa who boarded a plane in New York to fly to Orlando and visit Disney World. Theresa was about seven months pregnant. Thirty minutes into that flight, Theresa doubled over in pain and started bleeding. Flight attendants announced that they desperately needed a doctor, and a Long Island internist volunteered.
Teresa soon gave birth to a baby boy. But the baby was in trouble. The umbilical cord was wrapped tightly around its neck, and he wasn’t breathing. His face was turning blue.
Two paramedics on the plane rushed forward to help, one of which just happened to specialize in infant respiratory procedures. He asked if anyone had a straw, which he wanted to use to suction fluid from the baby’s lungs. The plane didn’t have any straws on board, but a flight attendant remembered having a straw left from a juice box she had brought onto the plane. The paramedic inserted the straw in the baby’s lungs as the internists administered CPR. The internist asked for something to tie off the baby’s umbilical cord. A passenger offered a shoelace.
Four minutes of sheer terror passed. Then the baby whimpered. The crew was able to joyfully announce it was a boy and the passengers erupted with cheers and clapping.
Sandy and Theresa gave their newborn son the name, Matthew. Matthew means “God sent.” The people on the plane were all God-sends,” Sandy said.
Indeed, God met the need through people who gave what they had and did whatever they could. That’s how God usually works. He works through people who give what they can.
That’s the moral behind the story of David and Goliath. David defeated the giant by giving what he had; the slingshot in his hand, and it was enough to win the day. In the New Testament, a little boy gave a few loaves and fishes and Jesus multiplied it to feed thousands, with baskets left over. Both David and that small lad were both God-sends.
In just a few days, the North Carolina General Assembly will reconvene. Lawmakers will come back to Raleigh for the Short Session on May 15, and the Christian Action League plans to be present as usual to address some of the critical legislative initiatives they will take up.
We never know exactly what a legislative session will bring, but we know that we have to be ready. Imperative to being prepared is having sufficient funding already in the bank. It’s an unwelcome distraction if we have to do fundraising and lobbying activity at the same time. During the time lawmakers are making laws, we need to be entirely focused on what they are doing.
That’s why I am asking you to be a God send to this ministry. The Christian Action League needs to raise approximately $10,000 to get us through until the end of session. Will you help us, please?
I trust you already understand how strategic this ministry is to the moral climate of North Carolina. Last year there were 10 bills related to alcohol and drugs, 4 gambling related, 6 related to sexuality and sex education, 4 education bills, 2 involving the parameters of the courts, 5 related to human trafficking, 5 related to marriage and parenting, 1 related to capital punishment, 1 related to tax reform, 6 related to religious liberty, and 1 related to Sunday hunting.
We need your help. We need you to be a God-send.
Being a God-send is giving what you can in a time of great need – during a period when the stakes are high. Every time the North Carolina General Assembly comes together the stakes are high. Their legislation, in some way, touches every one of us.
Maybe you could send us $25.00, $50.00, $75.00, $100.00 or maybe $1000.00. Perhaps you could give even more. Maybe you could also take this correspondence to your pastor, your church, your Sunday School class, your women’s or men’s missionary organizations and ask them to help. Maybe your church could take a special offering.
You know if God is calling you. You know if he is sending you.
