A North Carolina-based Christian activist believes the liberal Democratic senator from his state will be defeated this November.
Rasmussen Reports recently released two polls, matching incumbent Senator Kay Hagan (D-North Carolina) against two of her leading Republican challengers. She trails both of them: Thom Tillis, the Republican Speaker of the state House of Representatives (47% to 40%); and tea party activist Dr. Gregg Brannon (43% to 39%). Rasmussen did not release any polling data for Hagan against the third major Republican candidate, Mark Harris, pastor of First Baptist Church of Charlotte.
Hagan was elected to the Senate in 2008, defeating Republican incumbent Elizabeth Dole and becoming the first woman to defeat an incumbent in a Senate election. But she has come under increasing criticism for her support of ObamaCare.
Mark Creech is executive director of the Christian Action League of North Carolina. He isn’t surprised at the polling.
“Kay Hagan went into office, I would suggest, on the coattails … of Obama’s surge in 2008,” he tells OneNewsnow, “but that’s not going to hold momentum. I’m not surprised the polls are showing her falling back. And I anticipate that she will be beaten soundly in 2014.”
While in the U.S. Senate, Hagan has voted in favor of the repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, opposed North Carolina’s constitutional amendment defending traditional marriage, and come out in support of same-sex “marriage.” In November, she announced her opposition to the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act – legislation that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Republicans will hold a primary May 6 to choose their party’s nominee.
