Dear Friend of the Christian Action League, It may come as surprise to some, but that oft quoted text where the apostle Paul says: “Whatever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” actually has more to do with how a person invests their money than it does with sowing “wild oats.” In fact, that’s the context of the verse in the last chapter of Paul’s epistle to the Galatians. The apostle writes: “Let him who is taught in the Word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well-doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:6-10). The principle that the apostle expounds upon here is simply that money spent on fleshly or selfish desires will have no lasting fruit for eternity. But when one invests in the purposes of God, sacrificing to meet the needs of those who are poor and suffering, giving generously to further the kingdom of God, demonstrating an openhandedness for Christ’s sake, such not only will have results in this life but in eternity as well. By L.A. Williams, Correspondent Christian Action League RALEIGH — Lawmakers have given their stamp of approval to a sex education bill that would channel seventh-through ninth-graders through the Abstinence Until Marriage (AUM) curriculum as well as a Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) program that includes instruction about how to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), all FDA-approved methods of contraception, and sexual abuse and domestic violence. It also includes a provision allowing parents to opt their children out of the Comprehensive Sex Education subdivision and renames North Carolina’s current sex education program as the Reproductive Health and Safety Education program. The latest version of House Bill 88 — the Healthy Youth Act — passed the Senate Tuesday and, after less than a half-hour of debate on Thursday, the House voted 60-55 for concurrence. “As we said when the bill came out of committee, it is far from perfect and we did not endorse it,” said the Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League of North Carolina. “But it does keep Abstinence Until Marriage as the State’s expected standard for all students. A bill (SB 6 ABC Rules/Private Clubs) that would amend current law regarding the authority of the ABC Commission to adopt rules concerning private clubs, by deleting the specific requirements that private clubs have a waiting period for membership, was temporarily withdrawn for consideration from the Committee On Commerce, Small Business, and Entrepreneurship on Wednesday. Proponents of the measure argue that current law prevents military and other visitors in certain areas such as Wilmington from easy access to alcohol sales. They want the three day waiting period for membership for private clubs removed. Current statutes define a private club as “An establishment that is organized and operated solely for a social, recreational, patriotic, or fraternal purpose and that is not open to the general public, but is open only to the members of the organization and their bona fide guests” G.S. 18B-1000(5). Private clubs are eligible to sell alcoholic beverages that are lawful in their jurisdiction. RALEIGH — The School Violence Prevention Act championed by pro-homosexual groups across the state was voted into law Tuesday in the House, injecting “sexual orientation” and “gender Identity” into N.C. General Statutes for the first time. “No student should be bullied anywhere at anytime. And if we thought this bullying bill would help, we’d be rejoicing,” said the Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League. “Instead it will serve only to open the door to gay marriage a bit wider by providing legal precedence to specially protected categories.” The law will require school systems across the state to adopt anti-bullying policies that include a list of potential victims — those that may be picked on because of their “race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, socioeconomic status, academic status, gender identity, physical appearance, sexual orientation or mental, physical, developmental or sensory disability ….” though, as several lawmakers pointed out in more than an hour of debate on Tuesday, it does not offer any consequence for bullying or for school administrators’ failure to take action to stop the behavior. RALEIGH – Proposed tax increases don’t usually win many fans, but the House Committee on Health this week heard from supporters of a hike in alcohol taxes with an eye toward decreasing underage drinking. “We know that increasing the tax on alcohol has led to decreased consumption, particularly among youth who are more price-sensitive,” said Phil Mooring, chairman of the N.C. Substance Abuse Prevention Providers Association and a 30-year veteran of preventing and treating addictions. “The 2008 N.C. Child Health Report Card … reports that the percentages of alcohol and substance abuse among adolescents in North Carolina is ‘troubling’ and gives North Carolina an F in preventing underage drinking for the fourth year in a row,” he told lawmakers Thursday. “We can bring that F up to an A … but we need your help.” Read the rest of this entry » Posted in Christian Action League | 1 Comment » June 19th, 2009 Christian Action League
The House Committee on Local Government considered SB 68 – ABC Stores/School/Guilford on Wednesday. The measure, sponsored by Senator Katie Dorsett (D-Guilford) would allow the State ABC Commission, in deciding where to allow a new ABC store to be located in Guilford County, to consider whether the store is located within 1000 feet of a church, public school, or non-public school. The legislation originated from an argument between the school board in Greensboro and the ABC Board. The Board wanted to relocate a liquor store approximately 1700 feet west of SCALE Academy next to the School – something the school board opposed. School officials had been in contact with the ABC Board to try and resolve the issue, but to no avail. The school board then responded by filing a formal complaint with the ABC Commission and requested Dorsett introduce legislation to address the matter. Current law in North Carolina allows local ABC Boards to choose the location of an ABC store within its own jurisdiction, subject to the approval of the ABC commission. Call your House Member NOW and ask them to vote against SB 526! Posing as a bill to end bullying, the Anti-Bullying bill would actually normalize homosexuality and cross-dressing in public schools. RALEIGH – New legislation to replace the Healthy Youth Act – the controversial Comprehensive Sex Education bill – was introduced Wednesday in the Senate’s Mental Health and Youth Services Committee. The proposed committee substitute would mandate that every public school student first complete the Abstinence Until Marriage (AUM) curriculum according to the same guidelines included in our present Abstinence Until Marriage statute. The proposed committee substitute adds a new requirement to the statute, mandating that all students would also be offered Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE). However, parents who don’t want their children to learn CSE can opt them out through an appropriate mechanism developed by each school district. “This is a compromise bill and it is by no means perfect,” said the Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League of North Carolina, who argued against the League opposing the measure. “It does address a number of our concerns, among them the importance of keeping Abstinence Until Marriage (AUM) as the State’s standard for students.” Read the rest of this entry » Posted in Christian Action League | 1 Comment » June 12th, 2009 By L.A. RALEIGH – Rep. Bonner L. Stiller (R-Brunswick) will head with his family to Yellowstone National Park this coming week after resigning his post in the Legislature to spend more time with his wife and kids and at his Southport law firm. But the seven-year veteran of the House of Representatives says he hasn’t ruled out the idea of running for office again when his children are older. “Being in the Legislature is not a family friendly job at all,” said Stiller, 53, on Friday. “I haven’t been on vacation with my children in six years.” With two daughters in college and sons headed into the seventh and 10th grades, Stiller said he is one of few lawmakers who still have children living at home and who doesn’t live close enough to drive home for the evening. The senior partner of Stiller and Disbrow also said his law practice needs more attention. “I’ve been sort of setting this up for about five months. The economy is such that it affects everybody,” Stiller said. “I’ve only been able to put in two days a week – Mondays and Fridays – at the law office. And family and career have to come first.” Read the rest of this entry » Posted in Christian Action League | No Comments » |
