NEWLAND, N.C. — Visit the National Archives to view the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence and you must first pass by the Ten Commandments embedded in the entryway. Head to the U.S. Supreme Court and you’ll enter via large oak doors depicting these famous laws. You’ll also see the Ten Commandments posted when you drop into the Town Hall of Newland, N.C., but not for long if the Freedom From Religion Foundation has its way.
The Wisconsin-based atheist organization, claiming its purpose is to “protect the constitutional principle of separation between government and religion” wrote a letter Feb. 7 urging the town manager to “immediately remove the Ten Commandments plaque” from the Town Hall. The letter said a local complainant noticed the plaque when conducting business at the Town Hall in January and that “anyone entering the building for necessary government business will be confronted by it.”
The Town Council turned the letter over to the town attorney, who said Thursday that Newland had taken steps to retain independent counsel who specialize in these types of issues. Read the rest of this entry »

RALEIGH — Disappointed but determined — that seems to be the attitude of some Tar Heel lawmakers in the wake of Tuesday’s Court of Appeals ruling which struck down the state’s ban of video sweepstakes.
“I was deeply disappointed in the Appeals Court ruling but remain undaunted in my determination to rid North Carolina of this blight,” said Rep. Ray Rapp (D-Haywood) who has already met with the Attorney General’s staff to urge them not only to appeal the case, but to request an expedited hearing before the N.C. Supreme Court. Executive Director says pseudoephedrine should become a prescription drug
By L.A. Williams, Correspondent

RALEIGH — A new law that enters the names of pseudoephedrine purchasers into a national database to help track potential meth makers may not be enough to stem the tide of this drug problem, according to North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, who announced this past week that busts had reached a record high of 344 in 2011.
Pseudoephedrine, which is contained in a number of cold and sinus remedies, is the main ingredient in highly addictive methamphetamine, also known as “speed,” “chalk,” “crystal,” or “crank.”
Cooper attributed the increase in meth lab arrests to the rise of the “one pot” or “shake-and-bake” method of making meth and to increased law enforcement efforts. He said the Legislature might have to consider making pseudoephedrine a prescription drug, as it was until 1976. Read the rest of this entry »

RALEIGH — Heads up, North Carolinians. Your state lottery officials are intent on finding more and better ways to help separate you and your hard-earned paycheck. The latest idea, setting up keno games in restaurants and bars, would not only blur the line between the lottery and casino style gambling, but would help create more gambling addicts and lure new players to a game that even promoters admit is the king of rip-offs.
“Definitely run away from this game,” advises Casino Detroit Magazine, which labels keno “Worst Bet #1″ and explains that it involves the highest percentage hold of any casino game. Read the rest of this entry »

Following “An Evening of Salt and Light”, a gathering of hundreds in support of the NC Marriage Amendment, Dr. Mark Creech, Executive Director of the Christian Action League, addressed the semi-annual meeting of the Mitchell Baptist Association at Bear Creek Baptist Church on February 27th.
Dr. Creech was in Spruce Pine to inform Western North Carolinians about the May 8th ballot initiative, known as the North Carolina Marriage Protection Amendment. His organization has joined others statewide to educate citizens of the choices before them. “God’s definition of marriage is perfectly clear, it’s the union of one man with one woman,” Creech said. “From our beginnings in Genesis, the Lord intended marriage to be the bedrock of our society. And Jesus, in Matthew 19:4-6, affirms quite adamantly, what marriage is… “And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” Read the rest of this entry »

A national legal defense organization announced this week that when it comes to marriage, it’s time for an appeal — not to a judge, a court or even a legislature, but to the Author and Creator of this sacred institution.
“Will you join in a nationwide day of unified, focused prayer for Marriage in America?” the Alliance Defense Fund asks in a five-part tip sheet that believers can use to guide their prayer time this Sunday.
The Rev. Rocky Carpenter, Chairman of the Vote FOR Marriage NC prayer campaign, said the National Day of Prayer for Marriage couldn’t have come at a better time for the Tar Heel state, which is much in need of God’s guidance for the upcoming May referendum when voters will decide whether to protect traditional marriage in the state’s Constitution.
“The battle will be won in prayer,” said Carpenter, the pastor of Harmony Community Church in Peachland citing Jeremiah 33:3, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Read the rest of this entry »

SALISBURY — The American Civil Liberties Union and its threats to sue government bodies who open their meetings with prayer to a specific deity don’t seem to have frightened Rowan County Commissioners, four of whom said this week they have no intention of altering the prayers they lift unashamedly in the name of Jesus.
In fact, Chairman Chad Mitchell started Monday’s board meeting, which was packed with hundreds of prayer supporters, with an appeal to the “Father” in “Jesus name.” His freedom to pray as he felt led was proclaimed loudly and clearly by some two dozen members of the public who encouraged the board not to back down from the ACLU.
Rowan is among some 25 to 30 government bodies across the state in the organization’s crosshairs in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to let stand the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in a Forsyth County case that effectively outlawed so-called “sectarian” prayers at public meetings. Katy Parker, legal director for the ACLU’s Tar Heel chapter, told the media that Rowan was the first government to say that they’re “going to completely disregard the law.” Read the rest of this entry »

RALEIGH — Refusing to be swayed by the rhetoric of homosexual activists, Wake County leaders took a stand Monday night for traditional marriage, passing a resolution in support of the Marriage Protection Amendment and urging voters not to fail to cast their ballots May 8.
“We appreciate the courageous stand that the Wake County Commissioners have taken on protecting marriage,” said Tami Fitzgerald, chairwoman of Vote FOR Marriage NC. “The Commissioners’ support for the Marriage Amendment sends a clear signal that marriage should be defined by the people of North Carolina, not by activist judges and legislators.”
If it passes, the amendment will make the state’s Constitution consistent with its statutes and will uphold marriage between one man and one woman as the “only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.” Read the rest of this entry »

More than 150 pastors, concerned citizens and elected officials attended a rally in support of the NC Marriage Amendment in Icard recently. Mark Meadows, candidate for Congress from the 11th Congressional District, sponsored the Saturday morning event.
Meadows pledged support for the measure, explaining that he will not compromise on God’s institution of marriage. “My political consultants tell me I shouldn’t talk about it; the issue is just ‘too hot’. Well, I’m here to tell you that I believe when we stand for truth God is honored! I pray that North Carolinians send a message to those who would undermine our faith, our values, and our families,” he said. “And everyone here, each one of us, shares that burden,” Meadows stated. The candidate also recognized and thanked Senators Ralph Hise and Warren Daniel for their help moving the ballot initiate forward. Read the rest of this entry »
